• Navigation

What are the BirdyFish's sailing conditions and capabilities ?
Birdyfish will fly in 8 knots of wind.
From 8 to 23 knots, enjoy Birdyfish flying. As with all dinghies, as wind speed increases we would recommend reefing the sails. We do not recommend sailing above 23 kts wind speed for safety reasons.
Flat water is always easier for hydrofoils. Nevertheless, the boat performs well in chop and swells, but can become more unstable in tight chop.
How do you handle beach/beach starts with foils ?

The BirdyFish handles like a classic dinghy, but with foils ! We use a beach dolly to launch the boat in the water. Pull the boat off the dolly and start heading out to sail. As soon as the water is deep enough, lower the foils and start foiling.

For the BirdyFish S, the launching system is integrated into the hull. Simply remove the wheels from the hull once in the water, and stow them in the boat. The boat is ready to sail.

How are foils fitted ?
Is it possible to adjust the incidence of the foils and rudder ?
The main foils are fixed with no adjustment. Final adjustment is made at the factory prior to shipment. Body weight is used while sailing to trim out the boat when foiling.
The rudder angle can be adjusted by simply loosening the 2 bolts on top of the rudder plate with a 10 mm wrench when the boat is ashore or at a complete standstill in the water. It is set by aligning the adjustment lines (0, 1,2,3) with the transom.

When it comes to setting the rudder rake, each boat has its own specific characteristics, and the weight of the crew influences the longitudinal balance of the BirdyFish. However, we recommend a rudder rake position of around 1° or 1 on the adjustment line (applies to the BirdyFish double). Proper angle is achieved when the boat sails slightly bow down.

The higher the number, the greater the angle of the rudder's load-bearing surface and the greater its thrust
Adjustment depends on crew weight and wind strength.

Why no spinnaker but a code 0 ?
The spinnaker is too full of a sail. It is a true downwind sail, with the apparent wind always coming from ahead due to the boat's speed. A spinnaker is therefore an inefficient sail for the birdyfish. The Code 0 allows you to continue accelerating once airborne as it is a flatter sail that gives you the ability to sail higher angles. even a low reach.
